Gastrointestinal symptoms are very common in the population. Gerd symptoms, dysphagia and dyspepsia arise from the upper gastrointestinal tract. GI Transit has a special interest in diagnostics of dysphagia and dyspepsia due to the unmet need for new technology in the field.
Management options for these patients are limited due to the multifactorial control of food transport in the esophagus and stomach; and the difficulties in identifying the exact cause with current diagnostics. Precise diagnosis is necessary to guide therapy. The lack of physiologically relevant and easy-to-use diagnostic tests for identifying the underlying mechanisms is a significant problem.
The vision of GI Bionics is to develop technologies that can help patients with functional gastrointestinal diseases to improve the quality of life and reduce associated risk factors for disease initiation and progression
The founders of GI Bionics (Drs. Gregersen and Kassab) have developed and patented several technologies that are now being developed towards clinical trials and FDA approval. Below is a short summary of the IP-protected innovative EsoTrackR technology.
The EsotrackR constitutes a new paradigm for esophageal diagnostic testing, simulating normal food transport with a truly bionics device. EsoTrackR is a simulated food bolus that measures pressures, orientation, bending and shape changes during the transit from the mouth to the stomach. The technology integrates several current tests, provides an integrated framework for assessing function, and obviates the need for multiple tests. The impact is to use safe, low cost, less invasive, low risk, radiation-free device to provide new understanding of esophagus disorders to ultimately facilitate development of monitoring schemes. This can improve diagnostic and therapeutic modalities and reduce healthcare costs. The EsoTrackR is currently being tested in IRB-approved clinical trials.
